Residents and staff at Bryn Ivor Lodge care home in Cardiff came together

this October to celebrate Black History Month with a week filled with music,

learning, and cultural appreciation. The highlight of the week was a live

performance by a singer Mary Ann and her talented string band Calypso,

whose soulful set brought joy, energy, and togetherness to everyone in

attendance.

Alongside the music, the care home organised a variety of meaningful

activities throughout the week. Residents took part in a Black History Quiz,

testing their knowledge about inspiring Black figures from history, culture, and

sport. The quiz encouraged thoughtful discussion and friendly competition,

with many residents expressing how much they enjoyed learning new facts

about influential people who have shaped the world.

The team also created an informative display featuring photos and stories of

famous Black individuals, including Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Mary

Seacole, and Nelson Mandela. The display served as both an educational and

reflective space, sparking conversations about courage, equality, and change.

To add to the celebration, residents enjoyed a delicious selection of snacks

and drinks inspired by African and Caribbean flavours, offering everyone the

chance to explore new tastes and traditions while socialising and sharing

stories.

performance was truly the highlight of our Black History Month celebrations —

it brought so much happiness and energy to our residents. This week was

about honouring the achievements and culture of Black people while

celebrating the values of unity and respect that mean so much to us here. It

was wonderful to see everyone coming together to learn, sing, and celebrate.”

The celebrations at Bryn Ivor Lodge were a reminder of the importance of

community, diversity, and cultural appreciation — leaving residents and staff

alike with lasting memories of a meaningful and uplifting week.
