Nearly 50 years after it first burst onto television screens, one of Britain’s most beloved sitcoms is back, this time live on stage. John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers – The Play is heading to Wales Millennium Centre from 23–27 June 2026, bringing timeless comedy, unforgettable character and razor-sharp wit to Welsh audiences. Following two sold-out and critically acclaimed West End seasons, this hugely popular production is set to be one of the standout theatre events of the summer.

A comedy classic reimagined

Adapted by comedy legend John Cleese and directed by original West End director Caroline Jay Ranger, this lively stage version cleverly combines three of Cleese’s favourite episodes, The Hotel Inspector, The Germans, and Communication Problems, into a fast-paced two-hour performance. Complete with a brand-new finale, the production captures the spirit of the original television series while delivering the energy and immediacy of live theatre.

Packed with iconic moments, quick-fire misunderstandings and classic slapstick humour, the show proves that Basil Fawlty’s chaotic world is just as funny today as it was in the 1970s. From the moment Basil storms onto the stage, audiences can expect laughter from start to finish.

Meet the familiar faces

Leading the cast is Danny Bayne as the famously short-tempered hotelier Basil Fawlty, joined by Mia Austen as the sharp-tongued Sybil and Hemi Yeroham reprising his role as the well-meaning but frequently confused waiter Manuel. Joanne Clifton stars as the dependable Polly, while Paul Nicholas is the charming but eccentric Major.

The production also features a talented ensemble bringing to life many of the sitcom’s unforgettable guests, including the famously demanding Mrs Richards, whose hilariously relentless complaints push Basil to breaking point. Together, the cast recreates the fast-paced chaos that made the original series a household favourite.

Chaos at the seaside

Set in a fictional hotel in the seaside town of Torquay, the story follows Basil as he scrambles to impress suspected hotel inspectors while dealing with an increasingly unruly group of guests. Matters quickly spiral out of control when a party of German visitors arrives and the infuriating Mrs Richards refuses to be satisfied with anything.

Meanwhile, Basil attempts to conceal a gambling win from his ever-watchful wife, Sybil - all while relying on the capable Polly and the hopelessly accident-prone Manuel to keep the hotel running. The result is a whirlwind of confusion, mishaps and brilliantly timed comedy that keeps audiences laughing throughout.

A sitcom that stood the test of time

Originally broadcast on BBC Two in 1975, Fawlty Towers quickly became one of the most celebrated comedies in British television history. Despite running for just 12 episodes, the series won multiple awards, including two BAFTAs for Best Situation Comedy, and was later voted the greatest British television programme of all time in a British Film Institute poll.

Inspired by a real-life hotel owner in Torquay whose famously rude behaviour fascinated Cleese, the show’s unique blend of sharp writing, memorable characters, and perfectly timed humour ensured its lasting legacy. Today, its influence can still be seen across British comedy.
