Passing through peaceful riverside paths, ancient woodland, former railway lines and beautiful parkland, the trail offers a fantastic way to experience the changing scenery of South Wales at your own pace. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist, a keen walker or simply looking for a leisurely family day out, there’s a section of the trail to suit everyone.
For a shorter, family-friendly adventure, pick up the trail in Cardiff city centre and follow it north alongside the River Taff towards the charming village of Tongwynlais. This scenic six-mile route takes you away from the bustle of the city and into tranquil green spaces where you’re likely to spot ducks, herons, kingfishers and other local wildlife along the riverbanks. It’s the perfect opportunity to slow down, enjoy the fresh air and take in Cardiff’s natural beauty.
Once you reach Tongwynlais, make time to explore the enchanting Castell Coch, a striking 19th-century Gothic Revival castle nestled on the edge of Fforest Fawr. With its fairytale towers, richly decorated interiors and surrounding woodland walks, it’s one of Cardiff’s most photographed landmarks. Afterwards, relax with a coffee, light lunch or ice cream at one of the village’s welcoming cafés before making the easy return journey back to the city. Whether you’re out for a gentle ride, a family picnic or simply looking to discover a different side of Cardiff, the Taff Trail is an unforgettable outdoor adventure.

Need a bike? Pedal Power, based in Pontcanna, offers bike hire for all ages and abilities, with a wide range of standard and adapted cycles available. There’s also a community café to enjoy after your ride. Summer opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–6pm (last hire at 5pm).
Become a wildlife explorer
Turn an everyday walk into an exciting outdoor adventure with Cardiff’s Wildlife Explorer Trails. Spread across 12 parks and green spaces throughout the city, these family-friendly trails are a fun and interactive way to discover the incredible wildlife living right on your doorstep.
From colourful wildflowers and towering trees to birds, insects and woodland creatures, each trail is unique to its location, giving visitors the chance to learn about the habitats and species that make Cardiff’s parks so special.
Before you set off, simply download and print a trail leaflet, then pack a pencil or crayon for the adventure ahead. As you follow the map, you’ll discover a series of wildlife plaques hidden along the route. Match each plaque to the illustrations in your leaflet, create a rubbing and uncover fascinating facts about the animals, plants and natural habitats you’ve found.
Keep your eyes peeled as you explore—you might spot squirrels darting through the trees, butterflies and bees among the flowers, or birds nesting in the branches overhead.

Cool off at Victoria Park Splashpad
Looking for the ultimate way to beat the heat? Head to Victoria Park Splashpad, where children can enjoy 33 exciting water features, including sprays, jets and a giant tipping bucket.
The Splashpad is divided into dedicated toddler, junior and family zones, making it a safe and fun attraction for all ages.
