How to Keep Little Guests Happy at Your Wedding Reception

Weddings are magical for grown-ups — but for little ones? All that sitting, speeches and “shh”-ing can be a tall order. If you're inviting children to your big day, a bit of thoughtful planning goes a long way to keep them entertained (and give their parents a well-deserved break).

Here’s how to create a child-friendly reception that keeps kids smiling — and the grown-ups stress-free.
Create a Kids' Corner
Designate a cosy spot at your venue just for children. Think of it as their very own wedding ‘VIP area’:
Teepee play tents or pop-up dens with fairy lights and cushions
Soft play mats or rugs for crawling toddlers
Low tables with colouring sheets, sticker books, crayons, and puzzles
Stash of children’s books, toys, or building blocks
Bubble machines (outside!) for magical moments during photos or speeches
Top tip: Decorate the area to match your theme or colour palette — little details like mini bunting or personalised signage make it feel extra special.

Activity Packs at the Table
Keep young guests busy during the wedding breakfast with pre-prepared activity packs. Include:
Colouring books and crayons
A personalised “wedding day adventure” sheet with fun tasks like “spot the bride’s bouquet” or “draw the wedding cake”
Puzzle books or dot-to-dot games
Mini toys or fidget items (think small Lego sets, snap cards, or playdough tubs)
Sweet cones or snack bags with popcorn, raisins or biscuits
Pop everything into a cute paper bag or box with their name on it — this doubles as their favour too!
Child-Friendly Food & Seating
Coordinate with your caterer to create a kids' menu — think mini burgers, pasta, or picnic boxes with fun presentation. High chairs should be requested early, and if possible, seat children near their parents (but not directly in the path of the cake table!).

Entertainers & Extras
If you’re expecting several children, it may be worth hiring professional entertainment. Options include:
Children’s entertainers (magicians, balloon artists, face painters)
Mobile creche or nanny services — especially great during speeches
A puppet show or storytelling session for younger ones
A kids' cinema corner with bean bags and a film screening after dinner
Budget DIY Tip: Ask a creative friend to run a 30-minute craft session during the quiet post-meal lull.

Sweet Treats & Fun Touches
Set up a child-height sweet table or vintage pick ‘n’ mix cart
Include non-alcoholic “mocktails” with fruit and umbrellas at the drinks reception
Mini photo booth with dress-up props — little ones love playing photographer!
Winding Down
By evening, younger guests may start to fade. Consider:
Providing mini sleeping bags or a “quiet tent” in a side room with soft lighting and lullabies
Offering parents space to store pushchairs or baby bags
A small thank-you gift or bedtime book for little ones leaving early
Remember: A little effort goes a long way. When kids are entertained, parents relax — and everyone has more fun. Whether it’s a simple colouring book or a full-blown play tent wonderland, these touches show just how much you’ve thought of everyone on your big day.
