“To begin at the beginning…” Few opening lines are as instantly recognisable  or as richly woven into Welsh cultural identity  as those from Under Milk Wood.

Theatr Clwyd brings Dylan Thomas’s lyrical masterpiece back to the stage in a bold new production at Sherman Theatre from 30 April to 9 May 2026, promising humour, heartbreak and a beautifully eccentric portrait of Welsh life.

Directed by Kate Wasserberg, the production invites audiences into the dreamlike seaside village of Llareggub, where secrets simmer beneath everyday routines. Here, loves are remembered, grudges quietly nurtured and fantasies allowed to flourish. As night slips into morning, the audience becomes a privileged listener to the private hopes and hidden regrets of its unforgettable residents.

Thomas’ poetic drama has always balanced comedy with poignancy, and Wasserberg leans into both. Expect scandalous gossip, romantic longing and moments of unexpected tenderness, all threaded through music and richly textured storytelling. It’s a world that feels at once whimsical and deeply human.

Fans of offbeat ensemble storytelling such as The League of Gentlemen or the gentle observational humour of Detectorists will find much to love, while those drawn to the unsettling dream logic of Twin Peaks may recognise the same fascination with hidden lives beneath quiet surfaces. There are echoes too of the lyrical nostalgia found in The Singing Detective and the intimate community storytelling of Our Town.

This is the first production created through Craidd, an ambitious collaboration between Theatr Clwyd, Sherman Theatre, Pontio, Torch Theatre and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
