Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals are celebrating national recognition for patient safety in orthopaedic surgery.

This year, Nuffield Health hospitals performing joint replacements across England and Wales have, (for the fifth consecutive year), achieved the National Joint Registry (NJR) Gold Quality Data Award, the registry’s highest mark for data quality and compliance. This reflects rigorous standards designed to improve clinical outcomes for patients.
Rob Thomas, Hospital Director, said;
“Patient safety is non‑negotiable here, it underpins every decision we make. Achieving NJR Gold again reflects the meticulous work of our clinical and administrative teams, and the trust our patients place in us. We’ll keep investing in data quality, technology, and rehabilitation to ensure every patient’s journey is safe, effective, and personal.”
Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals have once again met 100% of the National Joint Registry scheme’s audit targets, evidence of meticulous data capture and a culture of continual improvement in hip and knee surgery and pathways.
What the NJR Gold award means for patients
Independent reassurance on safety and quality, The NJR continuously monitors joint replacements and provides performance feedback to hospitals continuously improving care.
One hundred percent audit compliance - Gold status reflects complete, accurate reporting, clear proof that we track outcomes transparently and consistently.
Data that drives better care - NJR insights support clinical decision‑making and inform regulators’ understanding of service quality, ultimately benefiting patients.
Mr Phillip Thomas, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Cardiff & Vale Hospitals added,
“NJR benchmarking keeps our joint replacement practice data‑driven. It guides implant choice, informs technique, and helps us refine pathways so patients have a clear, evidence‑based plan from pre‑op through to rehab.”
