Following a recent investment of over £1 million, independent private healthcare provider St Joseph’s Hospital in Newport is now able to offer all patients considering hip and knee replacement surgery even more accuracy and reduced recovery times with the addition of the latest technology in Robotic-Assisted Surgery from Mako SmartRobotics™.

This advancement in joint replacement surgery transforms the way total knee, partial knee and total hip replacements are performed, by helping surgeons to know more about individual patients and cut less.

The Mako SmartRobotics™  equipment combines three key components, 3D CT-based planning, AccuStop™ haptic technology and insightful data analytics, into one platform that has shown better outcomes for total knee, total hip and partial knee patients.

“With Mako SmartRobotics™, I know more about my patients than ever before, and I’m able to cut less. For some patients, this can mean less soft tissue damage; for others, greater bone preservation.” said Orthopaedic Surgeon Jonathan Manara of St Joseph’s Hospital, who performed the Total Knee Replacement procedure on Tuesday.

“Mako’s 3D CT allows me to create a personalised plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy before entering the operating room. During surgery, I can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across our joint replacement service at St Joseph’s to perform total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements.”

St Joseph’s Hospital is also celebrating its 80 Year Anniversary this year. The story of St Joseph’s began during the second world war in 1946 - two years before the birth of the NHS, when the founding sisters committed to bring health and care to the people of a growing community. The Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy were founded in Le Puy, France in 1650. Now a community of over 11,000 sisters, they live out Father Médaille’s original vision in communities around the world.
