Few stage musicals manage to combine blockbuster romance, edge-of-your-seat drama and a soundtrack packed with era-defining hits quite like The Bodyguard.

A Hollywood story reimagined for the stage

Based on the 1992 Oscar-nominated Warner Bros. film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard has become a global theatre sensation in its own right. Since its London premiere, the production has captivated more than 3.9 million audience members across 15 countries, cementing its place among the world’s most successful touring musicals.

At the centre of the story is Rachel Marron, an internationally famous singer whose glamorous world is disrupted by an escalating threat from an unknown stalker. Enter Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent turned professional bodyguard, hired to keep her safe at any cost. Used to being in control, neither Rachel nor Frank is prepared for the fierce personal connection that develops between them.

A star-studded cast takes centre stage

This latest touring production features an impressive cast led by international performer Sidonie Smith as Rachel Marron. Known for acclaimed appearances in Sister Act, Chicago and Jesus Christ Superstar, Smith steps into one of musical theatre’s most vocally demanding roles, bringing power, vulnerability and commanding stage presence to the superstar at the heart of the drama.

Opposite her is Olivier Award-nominated actor Adam Garcia, widely recognised for stage hits including Wicked and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as Frank Farmer. Completing the leading trio is Matt Milburn, familiar to television audiences from Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, as Sy Spector.

The songs everyone knows and loves

The Bodyguard’s enduring appeal lies not only in its suspenseful love story but also in its extraordinary music catalogue. Audiences can expect an evening packed with iconic songs, from ‘Queen of the Night’ and ‘So Emotional’ to ‘Run To You’, ‘Greatest Love Of All’, ‘One Moment in Time’ and ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. And then there is the show-stopping finale, ‘I Will Always Love You’, arguably one of the most recognisable songs ever recorded.

Far from a simple jukebox musical, the production uses its catalogue of hits to drive emotional momentum, weaving familiar anthems into the unfolding narrative.

A global hit comes to Wales

Directed by Thea Sharrock, with a book by Oscar-winning screenwriter Alex Dinelaris, the musical premiered in London’s West End at the Adelphi Theatre, earning four Olivier Award nominations.  Its arrival in Cardiff offers audiences the chance to experience a production that has repeatedly proven its global appeal while retaining the emotional intensity that made the original film such a cultural touchstone.
